How can I tell if phone is unlocked for international travel?

I have an iPhone 6 A1586 that I bought refurbished and then activated with Ting. I am traveling to China, and I am considering getting a SIM card compatible for Chinese carriers for my phone. The International Coverage help article said I would need to unlock a CDMA phone. How do I do this? Thank you.

  • Hi Lauren,

Thanks for reaching out to us. We can take a look at the status of your iPhone but we would need to use the IMEI of the device to sort it out. The IMEI is not something that you would want to post in a public forum like this so it's best if you get a hold of us by phone, online chat or email so that one of our representatives can look into the phone in private.

If you need our contact information it can be found here.

Hope you are having a great day!

  • The answer implies, but doesn't exactly state, that with the phone's IMEI, a Ting rep can determine if a specific phone is unlocked for international travel. Is that correct?

  • That's correct for iPhone. Since we started our partnership with Apple we have been able to determine the locked status of iPhone from a Ting account with its specific IMEI.
