WI-FI OR CELLULAR?

Hi all, my Ting bill is a little higher than expected this month and I'm wondering if I might be better off using cellular data or wi-fi,

I'm not entirely sure which I'm currently using.

I listen to a lot of music on Google Play Music, would this affect my phone rate?

Newbie questions from a-not-so-newbie, thanks for bearing with me, and for any informed responses.

  • Hi Les,

You'll definitely want to use Wi-Fi when available as its a great way to cut back on cellular data usage and save money with Ting. I would definitely suggest checking out our Ting blog as we have some great articles on keeping cellular data usage down.

Apps like Google Play Music will affect your rate if they are using your cellular data so the best way to avoid that would be to download music through the app in advance over Wi-Fi to listen to when out and about.

  • Hi Les,

I keep Data turned OFF until I need it. Like checking email when away from home Wi-Fi.

Made the mistake of starting an Audible book download while at home on Wi-Fi and when I left home the book continued to download on Data. Oops! Largest Ting bill so far.

My average Ting bill is $17.10. Loving the Ting!

An Audible book can be 500-600+ Mbs. Fortunately I got back home before the whole book finished downloading. I had another book waiting in the queue. :-(

Good idea to set Usage Alerts so if you forget to turn Data OFF you will know.

Another way to save Minutes is to have your friends use Google Voice and Hangouts. Free calling. You'll only get charged when a call is forwarded to Voicemail. One minute at most.

  • Thanks for the suggestion Wayne! There's a super helpful Reddit post on setting up Hangouts or GV with Ting I would definitely suggest checking out.
