What will happen to Ting's GSM service after their network agreement with T-Mobile expires in December 2019?

  • Hey Douglas,

Per the prepared remarks from our CEO on the news:

    • In terms of T-Mobile, we have given T-Mobile notice that we will be terminating our relationship with them effective December 19th of this year. Our agreement with T-Mobile provides a twelve-month runoff period, giving us until December 19th, 2020 to migrate our customers to another network. We sincerely thank them for their partnership over the past five years.

We have some things planned for customers who have phones that are already compatible with one of the other two networks we'll still be offering, In most cases for these customers, the only thing they'll need is a new SIM card.

For the limited number of customers who have GSM-only phones, we're still working out the details and will have something to announce in the future. For now, assume that if you're a GSM subscriber on the T-Mobile network, not much will change, and if and when it does, you'll be given a lot of advance notice and options.

I somehow just found out about this today, but I guess it was announced in July? And here I thought I was being smart buying a OnePlus 6 to be relatively future proof. But it sounds like my options are going to be switch to T-Mobile or shell out more $$$ for different phones to stay on Ting.

  • Charles,

What's nice about the T-Mobile network is that they're VERY liberal in the number of MVNOs they permit. You won't have to go directly to them, if you don't want to swap phones or your OP6 isn't compatible with our other networks.

I don't have recommendations, but keep your eye on nocontract.reddit.com as the time approaches. Hopefully, though, our offers will be enough to entice you to stay.
