Cannot purchase GSM sim card for iPhone SE on Ting shop page

Just wanted to give you Ting folks a heads up that today I tried to buy a GSM sim card for an iPhone SE or 6s on your shopping page and the only option I am given is a CDMA card. I thought I could use a GSM card with an iPhone? Is this a bug in your system or are you out of GSM cards?

  • Hey Scott,

With the drop-down menu that we are using for our SIM cards, the website defaults to the CDMA option if the phone is multi-network right now. The GSM SIMs are still available (if you go Other and Other it will get you to the GSM SIM quickly) for purchase online and in select Best Buy stores. I'll put the link to the GSM SIM here for you though.

  • Thanks for this answer; my friend ran into the same problem today.

I have to say, Ting's website needs some attention. I've been urging my friend to switch to Ting, and both times he tried he got sidetracked by a website problem. Not only couldn't he find GSM SIMs in the store, but when he was going through the onboarding process the website refused his address. (It requires an apartment number, even though he lives in a single house. And my own work address is no longer allowed for the same reason.)

He was ready to go with Cricket or Straight Talk instead, but I talked him down. Ting support put in the SIM order for him (possibly without my referral code, which would be ironic given how much time I've spent helping him.) So hopefully the rest will go smoothly and his confidence in your service will go up.

I know Ting support is aware of both these website problems already, but feel free to pass this anecdote along to the powers-that-be if it would help them understand that they are discouraging new customers. I signed up years ago and didn't have either of these problems.

  • Thanks, Matthew. I'll pass it along as sort of a poke to the team that is working on the website. There are changes coming in 2020 to the website that the team is working on right now but we don't want that to affect the day to day for our customers or those that are looking to sign up.

As for the referral credit, have your friend check the Billing History tab of their account once they activate their SIM card. If they notice that the $25 credit isn't there we can still get it applied for you both. Just have them send an email letting our support team know to help@ting.com, they'll just ask for your email address so that they can credit you properly.

Thanks for that tip, and thanks for passing along the story of my friend's experiences to the team.
