how can I block opening screen ads?
Unless you have the Amazon Fire Phone, lock screen ads are caused by third-party apps. It's usually booster apps or file managers, but any app can put ads on your lock screen.
If this started recently, look at the recent apps you've installed and try uninstalling them in the order you installed them to see if the ads go away.

Already uninstalled all recently-installed apps. Wondering if an app update could be involved.
It absolutely could. If you're comfortable posting screenshots here of the apps you have installed, I'm happy to point out any I might think might be the culprit.
I added a bar code reader and Torque Pro, an OBD2 reader app for monitoring car performance years ago. The rest are default apps that came with the phone (I'm having trouble getting a screen cap here)
I'd start by uninstalling the bar code reader temporarily and seeing if that resolves the lock screen ads, as I'm not aware of any ads in Torque Pro.
Okay, I've done that, and we'll see what happens. Thanks.
still getting ads
If installing/reinstalling the apps hasn't helped it sounds like you may need to back up and factory reset the device to try and remove those ads. Once restored to default they should stop and you could then load back your apps one by one to verify if they cause the issue to return.
