Roaming in Jamaica

Travelling to Jamaica for a weekend in February and wondering if my Samsung Galaxy S8 will work while there. I can get a SIM card while there if needed but as it is only for a weekend and I will use it only a couple of times I would be fine with using roaming if possible.

Question: will my phone work as is when I get off the plane? If so, what are the charges?

Any information will be very much appreciated.

  • Hi John,

We do offer international roaming in Jamaica with Ting. To use your phone there you'll need to have been a Ting customer for at least 3 months and enable the international roaming feature on your Ting My Account. This can be done through the device settings tab of your account.

While in Jamaica voice minutes are charged at a rate of $0.30 per minute, text messages are $0.12 per text and data usage is $0.25 per MB. I would suggest making sure that you turn off your data for apps that you aren't going to us if you don't plan on using it as the $0.25 per MB can add up very quickly.

I'm going to link you to the FAQ guide that we have on international roaming here but if you have any other questions please feel free to ask. I'd be more than happy to help.

  • Thanks very much, I appreciate the quick response & information. It is really helpful; I have enabled roaming and will disable data on landing pending wifi access.

    Have a good weekend,

    G

  • Hello John,

Don't know if you have left for Jamaica yet but I'm also a Ting customer and was assured by Ting my phone would work in Cuba but it never did. Much of my vacation was spent e-mailing back and forth with Ting customer service to no avail. Finally about 2 weeks in they sent me a coverage map which they said was limited (I don't know what it looked like because the map they sent me would not open). I don't know why they told me it would work when they have no coverage there (and didn't admit it for almost 2 weeks).

  • Thanks for the information Carolyn. I have not left yet - weekend of the 14th for 4 days - & we will be based near Montego Bay so hopefully within whatever coverage is available. I will provide an update when i get back.

    Regards,

    Gary
