International roaming

I recently returned from a trip to France and Morocco, my first since switching to Ting mobile. LSS, international roaming did not work at all. In every case, my phone (iPhone SE 2022) connected to the local service with LTE or 4G, but all data, calls and texts were blocked, nothing went through.

Extensive emails and calls with support were unable to resolve the problem. I am curious to hear if there are other users who have successfully used international roaming.

  • Hi Eric,

Thanks for reaching out! We're sorry to know about the issues you've been experiencing with international roaming. We do not guarantee service internationally as our network carriers do not have any towers located internationally. If international roaming was enabled on the device as well as your Ting account, and the APN's were set up correctly, then it would be a location compatibility issue.

We highly recommend getting local SIM cards when travelling to guarantee service.

  • Same issue as the OP. I requested international roaming before leaving for France. Support said it was set up. Now in France, I tried to telephone a French number on both my phone and husband's, both Samsung Galaxy S9. It give a message indicating Restricted LA201CA65. When I set it up, Support said nothing about these limitations nor was it in you online instructions. Very disappointing. Also, I did receive a text for my covid test result, but my husband did not, so texting may be unavailable/inconsistent as well.

  • Same issue unresolved right now after 2 hours on help line. Ting not working in Paris for us on four different phones.

  • Original poster here.  I was just back in Paris, roaming still didn't work.  If you have a new enough phone, I strongly recommend looking into an eSim for your international use. Basically provides the function of a local sim card, but all via software. I don't say this to let Ting off the hook-- I basically think they are being dishonest about the fact their international roaming doesn't work-- but just because an eSim is easy, works well, and costs almost nothing. See the Airalo app, for example, or just google eSim.

  • Same here, VERY disappointed. Still on a 14-day trip to Italy, started Nov 22, and it’s Dec 4 today. Called Ting prior to my departure from the US, switched all my “roaming” settings to “on” (cellular data, international). As soon as I got to Italy and cellular roaming (voice, data) not work!

While on a local (in Italy)WiFi connection I called Ting customer service and they said that they (Ting) did not switch on the service at their end, so they said they turned it on. It (cellular) worked for 1.5 days then it didn’t.

After three more calls with customer service, I gave up—and the three different customer service reps gave me contradictory information—I’m about to cancel, as this is unacceptable…luckily my partner had Verizon and saved us from getting lost and unable to make calls, get access to trenitalia train tickets (QR codes), etc.

I liked Ting until now and I am likely canceling due to this incident; I cannot risk another situation as described above, as I plan to travel toItaly often in the next few years.

  • Hello!

We're so sorry to know about the issues with international roaming. As we previously mentioned, we do not guarantee international roaming. Our network carriers do not have towers internationally, and we rely on partner coverage which is not always a guarantee. For a reliable service while roaming outside the USA, we recommend getting a local SIM card in the country you are visiting or international e-SIM cards.

We hear you on the information our customer service team provided and we're sorry they were different. We will be passing the message along to our team to prevent this from happening.

  • Original poster here.  For the benefit of the Ting staff, I want to emphasize that what bothers your customers is that Ting is not being honest with us. I have never seen one comment from a Ting customer saying that international roaming worked for them. So you are basically claiming to provide a service that you do not in fact provide.

I like Ting in general, and e-sim has made the roaming situation much easier to deal with. But I would still feel better if Ting was upfront that they do not provide functional international roaming.

  • Totally understandable, but international roaming does work a lot of the times. We just can not guarantee it because there are times where it does not work. It all depends on the partner coverage in that area, the compatibility of the phone with the coverage offered as well as the tower traffic.

We will pass the message along to our team members as well in regards to the functionality and guarantees of international roaming.

  • Thanks for the link, but that thread does not contain a single testimony from a Ting user that international roaming worked for them.
