Marking Utilities for Ting Fiber

What are private utilities? When and how to mark private utilitiesLocating public utilities

Booked your Ting Fiber installation and wondering if there's anything left to do?

Before we even think about laying fiber, we want to know what’s underground. This process is called locating, or marking utilities. We'll take care of getting the public utilities marked, but for private utilities, we’ll need your help.

What are private utilities?

Private utilities are utility services or underground lines not owned by a public utility company. If you are a property owner, it's possible you may have unmarked, underground private utility lines.

Some examples of underground utilities that may be hidden on your property are:

  • Sprinkler systems and irrigation lines.
  • Invisible pet fences.
  • Lights or signs on the property.
  • Buried storage tanks and lines, including fuel tanks and water discharge tanks.
  • Electrical lines going out to sheds or secondary buildings.
  • Sewer and septic tanks, systems, and piping.
  • Security cameras.
  • Automatic gates, parking kiosks.
  • Gas lines to BBQ or pool heaters.

When and how to mark private utilities

When you schedule your installation, we’ll ask about what private utilities are on the property, but they will also need to be clearly marked before we arrive. We’re not able to mark private utilities since we don’t have records of where they’re placed. Marking them ahead of time helps keep everything safe and on track.

When marking out your private utilities:

  • Use spray paint, flags or stakes (anything easy to spot) to mark out where private utilities are located.
  • If you’re not sure where a line runs, mark what you can. For example, marking sprinkler heads helps us map the rest.
  • Mark your private utilities ahead of your installation time to avoid delays.

Locating public utilities

Public utilities are owned by providers like water, electric and gas companies.

Before any digging, we will submit a request to 811 (Miss Utility) to mark these lines.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Utility crews will mark utility lines with paint or flags.
  • This usually happens within 7 days of submitting the request
  • The markings are temporary and will fade over time
  • Leave them in place so we can avoid those lines if we need to dig.
  • Each public utility that is located will be marked with a different color:
Red: Electric
Yellow: Gas, oil, steam
Blue: Potable water
Green: Sewer/drainage
Orange: Communication lines (cable, DSL, fiber, landline)
Purple: Reclaimed water
Pink: Survey marks
White: Proposed excavation
