Nameservers (DNS Servers) point to the provider you use to manage your domain's DNS records.
Where you manage your DNS records is flexible. You can do so through your Ting Domains management account, your hosting provider, or even a third-party DNS service provider.
Some people find it convenient to attend to their DNS settings in the same place as their domain registration, while others prefer to split up this management for varying reasons like interface preference.
If you registered your domain through us initially, it will have our nameservers associated to it by default.
The Ting Domains default nameservers are:
Our default A-record uses the IP address: 64.96.1.1
These default nameserver settings allow you to manage your DNS settings, including setting up domain redirection, through your Ting Domains domain management account.
For any third-party services you would like to associate with your domain, such as webhosting or email, they will provide you with the specific DNS settings required when you sign up. You can then update/add to our nameservers to allow the outside service(s) to work with your domain.
See Adding DNS Settings on Ting Domains Nameservers for steps to add specific DNS records through your domain management account.
Some outside service providers require you to use their nameservers for your DNS setup instead. If this is their policy they will provide you with the nameservers to use, either in the welcome email they send after you purchase their services or in technical articles in their help center.
Don't worry - if they require it, they will provide those details to you! You can then follow the steps in the section below to update your nameservers as required.
Ting Domains uses three name servers, but other services often only provide two. This is 100% normal and will not affect your desired outcome with your associated services.
If you are required to update the nameservers on your domain to accommodate another service, it is very easy to change from the Your Domains page.
Login to your Ting Domain account with your username and password tingdomains.com/site/login.
On the Your Domains page, select the Manage link to the right of the domain you wish to change the nameservers for.
Select Nameservers & DNS from the domain management menu on the left.
Under the Nameservers section at the top, click the Edit nameserver link to the right of the domain you need to change.
In the nameserver dialogue box, you'll see the Ting Domains default name servers.
If your outside provider has only given you two nameservers for their service, delete the last default nameserver in the list using the Remove button.
Then, simply overwrite the other two nameservers with the new ones supplied by your third-party provider.
Don't forget to hit the Save button at the bottom right when finished to save your new settings.
Back on the Nameservers & DNS page where you began, you'll now see the new nameservers you saved in place of Ting's default nameservers.
If you notice you made a typo or decide you actually didn't want to change your nameservers, simply click the Reset to default link. This will remove any new nameservers that were added and replace them with Ting's defaults. You can then follow the steps to add your new nameservers as desired and save them.
Nameserver changes do not reflect immediately. It can take 24-48 hours for the change to be complete. The time it takes for the change to reach all servers around the world so they can recognize your new settings is called propagation time.
If it's been less than a day or so and you aren't yet seeing your changes, (for example if you have associated website hosting with your domain and your website doesn't appear live yet,) there's no need for concern. Sometimes, information is handed off between servers more slowly than others depending on how much traffic is moving through the internet.
Generally if you wait a full 48 hours your changes will be reflected for everyone around the world.
