Purchasing a local international SIM is ideal for long-term trips or heavy phone use, helping you avoid unexpected charges. This also helps if you travel to a country outside our coverage areas. Once you have a SIM card from an international carrier and it's ready for use, remove the Ting SIM from your unlocked phone and install the new SIM card.
A prepaid phone is an alternative if you're going to a country where we do not offer coverage. With a local carrier, these are usually relatively inexpensive phones that you can load and reload as needed. If you need to be reachable while traveling or you're traveling for a more extended time, this can be a reliable alternative. You know what you're getting in terms of rates, and it's easy to get up and running.

If you use a foreign prepaid phone while traveling, you don't need to do anything with your Ting device. The only suggestion is to turn it off so the battery stays charged when you return.
If you're traveling for an extended time and won't use your Ting service, we can suspend it to prevent further usage. While service is stopped, you will be billed as usual.
VoIP services like Skype, Viber, Hangouts, FaceTime, and Facebook Messenger are great for staying in touch while traveling. They need Wi-Fi or data, but free hotel Wi-Fi can help. These apps are usually free and require both parties to have them. Some offer paid extras for calling phone numbers directly.
