5G is the fifth generation of wireless network technology and represents the next step beyond LTE's capabilities. With 5G, large amounts of data can be transmitted more efficiently than with 4G LTE, leading to more robust network reliability and faster downloads.
At Ting Mobile, 5G access is included in our plans at no extra cost. All plans allow you to benefit from both 4G LTE and 5G, provided you have a compatible device. It's important to note that 5G isn't replacing 4G any time soon; instead, the two technologies will coexist and work together. All 5G-capable phones will be able to use both 4G and 5G technology.
The phasing out of 3G is due to its outdated nature and limited data speeds. Most modern phones use 4G LTE technology, while 5G is just beginning to roll out. Frequency bands are limited, and older 2G and 3G networks occupy space that 4G and 5G networks need to meet increased demand. As a result, these older networks are being shut down.
Ting Mobile offers mid-band 5G coverage in nearly 410 cities and towns across the country, with more added regularly. In these areas, average download speeds are around 7.5 times faster than today's average LTE speeds, with peak download speeds reaching up to 1 Gbps.
Not all phones are capable of accessing a 5G network. Only phones with 5G-enabled hardware are compatible. If your phone is 5G compatible, you should see a 5G icon in the top bar when you're in an area with 5G coverage. Unfortunately, 3G or 4G phones cannot be upgraded to 5G; you need a phone built with 5G-enabled hardware to access 5G networks.
Manufacturers are gradually releasing more 5G-capable phones, which are becoming widely available at most retailers.
Whether it's worth upgrading to a 5G phone depends on your needs. If you already have a 4G LTE phone with VoLTE enabled and are not looking to upgrade, you might not need a 5G phone. However, if you are considering an upgrade, a 5G phone can help you take advantage of the new technology and prepare for future benefits.
