In most cases, it's better to wait until after you've signed up to avoid complications. That said, there are some situations where canceling ahead of time might make sense.
If you're trying to avoid a new bill from your current carrier, we recommend starting the Ting activation process at least three days before your next billing cycle. This timeline helps ensure a smooth transition. Of course, the more time you allow, the better.
If you’re getting a new number, you can cancel your current service anytime. That said, we recommend waiting until your Ting service is active to avoid any gaps in connectivity.
If you want to keep your current number, wait to cancel your old service until the porting process is complete and your number is active on Ting. Canceling too soon could result in your number being deactivated, which would interrupt the transfer. If that happens, your old carrier will need to reactivate your number to continue the port.
If your phone is locked to your current carrier, it’s best to unlock it before canceling your service. Unlocking is easier while the phone is still active on your old carrier.
Before canceling, review your current contract for potential cancellation fees. Unfortunately, Ting isn’t able to cover costs related to breaking a contract.
